Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, July 6 – 9am-noon


We’re sending out our email a bit ahead of time, hoping to catch some of you headed out for a long weekend. We will be at market this weekend, ready to stock your fridge, freezer, and pantry with goods!

I’m already feeling pressure to use all the produce we are so lucky to have available. But, it is a lot. I know some of you run into this, too. I’m trying to be more flexible with recipes this year and so far it has been a success. In place of spinach for a Spanish dish, I subbed kale with great success. Last night I made a salad that called for arugula, watercress, and Napa cabbage to which I subbed mixed lettuce, curly endive, and kale for an amazing result.

Every weekend, I take an inventory of produce we have in the fridge and I base my weekly recipes around those…with full intent to use everything. Most of the time, it’s a fun challenge. Last weekend, I used a bunch of veggies making quiche. We were entrée salad heavy this week along with some tasty vegetable-based tacos. And, I was able to brew some fresh mint tea and dry some oregano for use this winter. I love this time of year.

Also, those of you who enjoyed Matt’s snake story from a couple weeks ago may be interested in his new story. He and Small Steve had a little run in this week, except this time Matt has video. The two are slowly learning to co-exist, with Matt handling it a bit better than Small Steve. For the record, this video does not increase my willingness to harvest tomatoes this year…as the video was taken right by the tomato patch. Prairie Potters Master Gardeners will be at market this weekend. They have been very helpful to the folks who have had questions about random plants growing in their yard, answering why a plan hasn’t flowered, and how to work with reseeding after a hail storm. Stop down and ask your question to these trained folks.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.
