Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, October 27 – 9am-noon

It’s difficult not to love days like today. True, I don’t want colder weather and definitely not winter. But, the leaves that remain on the trees are beautiful golden against the sun, the air smells lovely, and I simply feel an overall calm. While the season continues to wind down, we are still busy at home and at the farm. The green tomatoes we rescued and have stored downstairs are turning red daily. I made my third batch of tomato sauce from them today and probably have another couple stock pots over the next few weeks. My freezer bag of veggie scraps was getting full, so I made a nice vegetable stock which is now bagged and frozen. Plus, I cooked up a double batch of Lamb & Kale Stew which is also in the freezer. At the farm, we are still tending to arugula, broccoli, radishes, carrots, celery, kale, parsley, the last of the leeks, and some high tunnel mini romaine and kohlrabi which might be ready this weekend. We have also planted the garlic for next season and will plant the Jerusalem artichokes next week.

At market, we are having a Biggest Pumpkin Contest this Saturday. Judging will be at 10am and the winner will receive a prize from B&G Produce. Bring your pumpkin to the Market Manager booth to register!

Grab a coffee and muffin from hummingbird as you stroll through market. BLC Ranch has wonderful wool items to keep you warm during the coldest months. Check out the hat I’ve been wearing the last few weeks. Stock up on jerky and back-on-the-shelves chicken snack sticks at Bad River Pack! Then, stop at B&G Produce for some rustic bread, hummus, and produce. They will have a sale on Pea Shoots and Winter Squash. Plus, potatoes are back!!

Although this is the last regular season market, many of us will be at Zonta on November 10-11 and we also have our special Thanksgiving market on Saturday, November 17. Plus, we will have monthly off-season markets again this year. Look for updates via email, Facebook, and Instagram.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, October 20 – 9am-noon

A market customer gave me a book to read a couple weeks ago and I love it. An Everlasting Meal by Tamar Adler is a book I will read again and again. Throughout the season, I’m constantly looking for and testing recipes, creating new recipes, and trying to keep us all excited and energized about each vegetable in the garden. For the most part, I try to keep things relatively simple. But, sometimes we just get out of control. I looked at a magazine recipe recently and it was two pages long because the ingredient list went on and on! That’s simply too much! This book is bringing me back to basics, but simply delicious basics. Along with a few stories, discussions on food and cooking, and a smattering of recipes, this book has reminded me of something. When you start with quality ingredients, you don’t need to overdo or overthink anything. Simple can be, and is, delicious. Two nights ago, I toasted bread and rubbed it with fresh garlic…warmed up some homemade tomato sauce, rested some goat cheese on top, and heated it in the oven until the cheese was soft to my touch…and sautéed some of the last zucchini in our fridge. That was dinner, plain and simple. A couple quality ingredients resulted in a wonderful and tasty meal.  If you want to check out this book, Prairie Pages has ordered a couple copies which will be available on Monday.

This will be the last market for FREE Face Painting by Amanda! Be sure to stop down and get some camo, puppies, or whatever else you’d like!!

There will be some lovely sweets at market this weekend. Sweet Peas is featuring Caramel Apples. Venner Farm has her super yummy Pecan Sandies. Hummingbird will have her Lemon Rosemary Shortbread. Nancy’s Nest will have Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies. And, at B&G Produce you’ll find Sugared Lemon Blueberry Buttermilk Biscuits with Citrus Glaze.

Our two meat vendors have a lot to offer as well. Nancy’s Nest is promoting her Beef Bundle sale again (see details below). Hanisch Farms is bringing their trailer full of goods! It’s a great time to stock up and also to place your holiday order of turkey, ham, duck, and goose for the special Thanksgiving market on November 17 market.

Don’t worry…we still have plenty of vegetables available. Hanisch Farms and B&G Produce have a really nice variety of items from arugula to cabbage to carrots to pie pumpkins.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, October 6 – 9am-noon

Wednesday was a long day. The wind was intense and we were working against time to harvest as many of the sensitive crops as possible before the frost last night. The farm hit a low of 25. We didn’t get everything we wanted harvested, but we did save a lot. The long day, the wind, and the cold took it out of us. Since it rained a good part of today anyway, we stayed home and processed some more items for winter. Roasted tomatoes, ground our smoked paprika peppers into a lovely powder, eggplant Parmesan in the freezer, dehydrated apples, applesauce, candied jalapenos, frozen okra to thicken stews and chili, chopped and frozen parsley, and fermenting red jalapenos for hot sauce. I love being in the kitchen with Matt and we feel so accomplished after a day like today. A few more days like this and we should be set until spring.

One of the items we saved last night was bell peppers. So, with very purchase on Saturday at B&G Produce, you will receive a free bell pepper!

You’ve been asking for it and she has been listening. Bab’s Bites ‘n Bones is bringing Grande Caramel Sauce and Clara’s Chocolate Ice Cream Topping to market this weekend!! Be sure to grab some before she sells out. Just a note, the caramel sauce is wonderful with fresh sliced apples.

This will be the last market for B&G Produce’s Basil Kale Pesto. It freezes well, so get a few and toss them into your freezer. You will love enjoying the fresh flavors of summer in a few months.

Also, BLC Ranch is back this weekend after a couple markets. The hat you all loved last weekend…Linda made it! Stop by and check out what else she has to offer. It’s quite possible I will be wearing my mitts this coming Saturday.

Lastly, Prairie Potters Master Gardeners will join us for market! Any questions about saving some of your plants during winter weather, ask them!

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, September 29 – 9am-noon

I kind of become attached to our plants during the season. On Monday, our last day at the farm before a short retreat in the Hills, I thanked the basil for doing so well this year. It’s a good thing I did because the plants took a hit Tuesday night and will probably get a bit more tonight. This time of year we struggle trying to decide whether to simply harvest all of something or wait and see. The complete harvest sometimes seems like a good idea. However, that limits how long we’ll have those items at market. On the other hand, if we wait and see…we risk losing the entire crop to frost. Uggh.

I am looking forward to some preserving this weekend. The last of our tomatoes will be roasted and turned into tomato sauce. I have a few eggplant from market last weekend that I plan to make and freeze some eggplant Parmesan. The last of the zucchini will go into a few batches of Zucchini Meatballs. Plus, we have a bunch of bell peppers which I will probably use in frozen bean and cheese burritos. It’s a lot of work, but I love effortlessly pulling these items from our freezer mid-Winter.

This will be the last market for B&G Produce’s Blue Cheese Walnut Pesto. It freezes well and we are making a bunch, so get a few and toss them into your freezer. You will thank us later. Also, this will be the only weekend of the season for Grilled Eggplant with Cilantro & Tamari Hummus. It is unique and delicious!

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, September 22 – 9am-noon

I enjoy Fall. Hearty roast beef cooking for hours on low, slowly warming the house as it becomes unctuous and delicious. Surrounded by garden potatoes, celery, onions, and carrots, it highlights some of my garden favorites. But, am I ready to say goodbye to my summer lovelies? No. I am not ready for the fragrant smell of basil to abruptly end. I don’t want to stop seeing the yellow and green squash, sometimes growing faster than I can harvest them. I want to continue cherishing the okra plants as they reach for the sky. Yet, I can feel it in the air. The cool of Fall is very present. So, I guess it’s time to embrace change.

That being said, each weekend B&G Produce still has pesto is a gift. Be sure to start stocking up for winter. Buy some pesto and toss it in your freezer to bring forth summer thoughts in January.

Lauren with hummingbird is introducing a fun new item this week. Her PB Power Muffins. Full of oat flour, bananas, peanut butter, chocolate chips, and just a little brown sugar and honey. Bab’s will also have a new item…Lavender Orange Scones. Yum!

This will probably be the last market of the season for Vogel Produce. Be sure to stop by and thank them for joining us this season!

Hanisch Farms will also be taking holiday orders for turkey, ham, duck, geese, and all other meat products!

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.
