Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, August 24 – 9am-noon

Even though it’s only August, the feel of fall is in the air. Some of my favorite vegetables ripen this time of year. This weekend, we’ll have our first leeks of the season. If you’ve never had a leek before, they are in the onion family. Their flavor is mild, for an onion, and can be used nearly everywhere a regular onion is used. Imagine this, if you will…caramelized onion, bacon, blue cheese pizza with garlic fermented honey brushed on the crust as soon as it comes out of the oven. I’ll just leave this right here.

Our friend, Antonio, at Gallo’s will be open Saturday morning (beginning at 6am!) serving breakfast burritos. Believe me when I say they are delicious. So, get a burrito downtown Pierre, stop at hummingbird to grab a beverage, and then sit down at one of the customer tables we have set up to enjoy. We’ll be ready to help with your weekly market items after your bellies are full.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, August 17 – 9am-noon

Another weekend means another Sunday afternoon of meal prep and winter preserving. We are almost out of the sweet corn we processed last summer, so it’s quite possible I will be bagging up some sweet kernels this weekend. If we have extra basil, I’ll make some basil oil by simply blending olive oil and basil to a barely pourable consistency into mini muffin tins. A quick freeze on a sheet tray and they all get tossed into a freezer bag together until a cold winter night hits and we want some fresh basil stirred into our Bolognese sauce. You can ask Matt and he will probably agree that I get giddy over preserving food for cool months. I love putting these items into the freezer and knowing I will still be able to eat local vegetables when it’s 10 degrees. I know! I know! Don’t talk about cold weather. Fair enough. Let’s enjoy the rest of this summer. Oh, and welcome back to school students and teachers!

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, August 10 – 9am-noon

Many of you have asked if we were affected by the hail storm Tuesday. We were, but luckily the farm was right on the edge. Did we have loss? Yes. Could it have been much worse? Definitely, yes. So, we’re thankful for the relatively minimal damage. This was a rough week for farmers in the area, though. If they were lucky enough to get crops in this spring, some of them lost everything on Tuesday evening. I grew up a farmer’s daughter. Watching the large hail stones hit the ground minute after minute, stress levels increasing with each of those passing minutes. I have no doubt, many of those farmers were out as soon as the storm passed, assessing damages. These are some of the most dedicated and hardest workers around. Next time you see a farmer, whether small or large-scale, please thank them for what they do.

Well…we had a classic summer meal last night. Sweet corn and BLT’s. Honestly, though, does it get any better? If you need help with that question, the answer is “no”. It does not get any better. I may have that same meal again tonight. And, tomorrow. And, the next day. Repeat.

You will be so happy, because we will have local honey again this weekend! Pfeifer Beekeepers, a new vendor, will be at market with honey. Get yours before it sells out!

We are excited to welcome back the Right Turn this weekend. If you missed them last weekend, be sure to check out their booth this Saturday. They are showcasing artwork created by students and staff. Cards and prints will be available with donations to support their education programs. Staff will be available to provide information about upcoming classes and answer questions.

Lastly, this weekend is Crazy Days downtown. Our friend, Antonio, at Gallo’s will be set up beginning at 8am with breakfast burritos and other delicious items! Brewbirds coffee truck will be set up, pony rides, face painting, and a balloon artist!

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, August 3 – 9am-noon

At the B&G Produce garden plots, summer has finally arrived. Matt texted me pictures of Padron peppers, cherry tomatoes, and okra. That’s it. Summer is here.

I’ll be honest with all of you. I am giddy waiting for that small handful of cherry tomatoes. The first ones will be popped directly into my mouth and thoroughly enjoyed. But, the next set? Those will be roasted and tossed into a warm pasta of roasted eggplant, pesto, and fresh mozzarella…one of my absolute favorite summer meals.

I’m not over the other lovely garden items. Our pickling cucumbers have spent more time as slicers this season and I’m loving them. Try this Roasted Sweet Potato & Sauteed Greens Poke Bowl for a wonderful summer meal that also makes excellent lunch leftovers.

We are excited to welcome the Right Turn this weekend. They are hosting a booth to showcase artwork created by students and staff. Cards and prints will be available with donations to support their education programs. Right Turn is a United Way partner agency that supports education across the lifespan.
