Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, June 15 – 9am-noon

Well, Matt had an encounter this week. An encounter with a 3-ft bull snake in one of our outlying garden plots, rightfully named “Snake Butte”. Luckily, he stepped on Small Steve and not Big Ben, the 6-ft bull snake who also lives in this plot. Matt and Steve were equally scared of each other, but Matt made a lot more noise and many more movements than Steve. Although a true fright, we appreciate having the bull snakes around for rodent control and to help keep rattle snakes away. Does this have me looking forward to tomato harvests? No. No, it does not.

Ok, onto the weekend. Hummingbird’s back for your strolling beverage pleasure. Produce keeps rolling in and, of course, we’ll have delectable desserts, baked goods, and bread.

MOPS will have their playhouse set up and will be selling raffle tickets to win the fun house! They will also be doing a bake sale to raise money for MOPS programs.

As soon as produce is plentiful, we try to make veg-centered meals. I’ve been leaning heavy on poke  bowls the last couple weeks. A basic sushi rice base topped with a tamari-based sauce and variety of fresh vegetables makes for a lovely meal. Tonight, ours will have roasted sweet potato (stored from last season!), pea shoots, carrots, green garlic, and broccoli. I’ve also made varieties using fresh ahi tuna (thanks, CHOPS) and roasted salmon. They have all been heavenly and I’m sure we’ll be eating them all summer.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, June 1 – 9am-noon

From the market perspective, we’re just getting started. From the garden perspective, we’ve been working on planning and projects since mid-December.  If we’ve learned anything over the last ten years of farming, it’s that we need to be ready to adjust. We adjusted our garden plan when our high tunnel succumbed to the March winter storm. We have been adjusting our planting successions continuously over the last couple months due to the cold, wet spring. And, our biggest adjustment this season has been my going back to work full-time while Matt continues full-time work on the farm. While these adjustments are, at times, frustrating and depressing, they are also necessary to make our business work. So, while I miss being at the farm day in and day out, I find myself enjoying market days even more. I also relish sitting down with Matt at the end of his day and talking about farm progress over dinner and a glass of wine. Onward.

We are holding our first online contest of the season! After you shop at market, show off a picture of your market haul on our Facebook market post from this week. Doing this will enter you into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate from Maggie at One Brand Beef on June 8!!

Lauren with hummingbird is making her first appearance of the season! Matt is so excited to have some of her Sumatra pour over coffee Saturday morning. Excuse him if he pushes you to get in the front of her line. Also, Bub’s Produce is overflowing with asparagus, so they will be joining us at market Saturday. You know the drill. Shop, grill, enjoy.

Make sure the kiddos stop over to the Free Craft booth and Paint Their Own Sun Catcher! Then, stop by and have Amanda paint something amazing on their faces or hands. While the kids are occupied, chat with the Master Gardeners about your most challenging garden questions.

Lastly, we’d love to have you join us on our Vendor Cruise and Picnic on The Sunset next weekend (June 8). We will depart at 1pm for a lovely afternoon cruise. Pre-order tickets here.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, May 25 – 9am-noon

Well, I feel like the weather might be taking a slight turn for the better. Farmers and ranchers across the state could use a little less rain/snow and a bit more sun. I know I’m ready for a good dose of vitamin D. Even with my light skin, I say “bring it on”…that’s why I use sunscreen!

Our bees were out in force today, enjoying the sunlight and working on all the fruit tree blossoms. And, this weekend we have a great way to teach kids how important bees are in our lives. Be sure to send your kids over to the FREE Decorate Your Bumble Bee Flower Pot. Pollination station!

Remember, May is Beef Month, so stock up on all the yummy beef available at market. Maggie with One Brand Beef is offering her Burger Bag again this week as well as a Memorial Day BBQ Box. Hanisch Farms is making their season debut. Along with their delicious beef, they also have pork, chicken, and lamb. Also, be sure to ask One Brand Beef and Hanisch Farms about pre-ordering for fall delivery.

It’s not just about beef, though, because May is also egg month! Be sure to get your egg fix at B&G Produce, Cedar Creek Gardens, or Hanisch Farms.

Nancy’s Nest is making her season debut with her famous baked goods and honey! We purchased honey from Nancy throughout the winter and have really enjoyed its lovely flavor.
