Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, August 18 – 9am-noon

Last week, I mentioned wanting to be overflowing with tomatoes. I still want that. I am ready. But, instead, we are overflowing with pickling cucumbers and zucchini! Thank goodness our Preserve It CSA members are ready to make pickles! This weekend I will make zucchini relish to sell at market, so that will help with the excess. Now, I just need to have a chat with all those tomato plants. Be right back.

We have a couple special treats this week. If you haven’t shopped at the Tuesday night market, you haven’t met Grady . Grady is a young entrepreneur who is selling sweet corn to help pay for his college. This young dude is a salesman. He knows a ton about the sweet corn he is selling, helped plant it, and helps harvest. He’s a cutie and I hope you all support him this weekend. Added bonus, his sweet corn is pretty tasty.

Bad River Pack is back after a hiatus to Sturgis. You’ve been craving their beef jerky? Problem solved.  Hanisch Farms is here for their monthly visit, so it’s a great time to stock up on their items. A quick, easy, and super delicious meal we’ve been making after long days in the garden is lamb kofta. Essentially these are lamb meatballs and the recipe is simple. Saute some onion and garlic in a pan until nice and brown. Cool slightly and mix with one pound ground lamb, about ¼ cup Panko, chopped parsley/cilantro/mint (whatever you have on hand), salt & pepper, and if you have it…some Garam Masala and/or curry powder. Form into small patties or meatballs and fry in olive oil until perfectly browned/crisp. Serve with pita, sour cream sauce, feta, and sliced garden tomatoes. The sour cream sauce is simply sour cream with chopped herbs (whichever ones you added to the meat mixture), salt & pepper, and lime juice. As a side note, this sauce is also divine with boiled potatoes or your morning omelet.

We’re not done yet. Lauren is back this weekend with her pour over coffee and she’s bringing a friend. Most of her coffee beans are from Westbound Coffee out of Brookings. Andrew is joining us for this one market and will have his coffee beans and custom T-shirts. Be sure to stop by their booth and also check him out on Facebook @westboundcoffee.

Whew, we’ve got a lot ahead…and I didn’t even mention the rest of the vendors, story time with Rawlins Library, and face painting with Amanda!

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, August 11 – 9am-noon

Thanks for playing along with our online National Farmers’ Market Week contests this week on Facebook and Instagram. We still have two more to go. On Saturday, be sure to take a photo of your market haul…because we’ll be asking for that as an entry for the last set of prizes!

The heat. We’ve been pretty lucky up until now, but it is August and we’re due for a little heat. The tomatoes will really ripen now and I’ll be honest, I’m ready to be overflowing in tomatoes. I want to make roasted tomato sauce to can for winter. It’s one of my favorite preservation items, hands down. Really, I’m ready to preserve everything I can get my hands on. I am trying some new refrigerator pickles and am hopeful they will finally be the pickle I enjoy. Fingers crossed.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, August 4 – 9am-noon

We are super excited to welcome the Bloodwashed Band of SD back again this weekend. They will kick off at 9am and play until shortly after 11am, so be sure to stop down and enjoy the live music while sipping some cold brew coffee, nibbling on a cookie, and chatting with the Master Gardeners about your pepper plants.

Eating local isn’t always easy. Hello winter. So, to make it a bit easier on ourselves, we preserve during peak season and then we have local food throughout the year. We always make sure we have plenty of local beef and other meats in our freezer. Then, when produce comes in heavy, we start preserving. Kale is an easy one…blanch, ice bath, squeeze out water, freeze. Instead of grabbing one bunch of kale, try grabbing 4 bunches and freezing 3. One bunch will easily fit into a quart size freezer bag. I can toss frozen kale into soups and stews, saute into an omelette, or cook with garbanzo beans and smoked paprika for a Spanish-inspired meal.

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Fort Pierre Farmers’ Market – Tuesday, July 31 – 5pm-7:30pm

Hot Nights, Cool Crowd is the theme this week. Mother nature is making sure we have a hot night. You need to help us ensure a cool crowd! MOPS is hosting our food fundraiser this week, so be sure to plan your dinner around their meal. For a pre-dinner snack, stop by the SCA booth to learn about Viking cooking and sample some bread they would have baked. Stroll through the Pierre Streetmaster cars on your way to the Rawlins Library tent. Bring a blanket and settle in for stories and prizes, every 15 minutes. Vendors will be in their usual location with vegetables, baked goods, grass-fed beef, crafts, wool items, hummus, and pesto. Be sure to end your evening with a cruise on The Sunset, pushing off at 7pm.

We tried some of Cowan Ranch short ribs last week and they are wonderful! Slow cooking is key to tender, fall apart ribs. Definitely worth a shot!

Most farmers’ market vendors accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.

Capital City Farmers’ Market – Saturday, July 28 – 9am-noon

It looks like we are heading into a lovely weekend for market! We might be a little chilly harvesting Friday morning…and I am excited! We also have some amazing produce coming your way, including the first green beans and sweet corn of the season!! OK, yah, it’s definitely summer. Where’s the butter?

Someone asked us recently where we buy our meat. We easily responded, “from the market vendors”. I love knowing so much of my food was grown and raised within the state. Be sure to stock up on lamb, chicken, and pork while Hanisch Farms is here this weekend for their monthly visit. They and Nancy’s Nest will also have beef.

Is there a better feeling than looking at your dinner table and having so much local goodness? And, we still have another 3 months to go! Let’s do this!!

As a market, we accept credit cards and EBT. Shop vendors who accept cc/EBT and pay once before you leave! Stop at the Market Manager booth to start the process and have fun shopping.
